The primary responsibility of the personal manager is to offer personal
guidance to you, the actor. Managers can also use their clout and
connections to work with agents in finding you work. Like agents,
their pay is usually based on a commission of your gross salary. For
personal managers, the commission rate is more along the lines of 15%.
Think of your personal manager as someone who will oversee and manage all
aspects of your career. While the agent is specifically out trying
to get you auditions and interviews for work, your manager will work with
you more closely on developing your individual style.
Managers assist you with clothing, hair styles, photos, professional
training, workshops, exposure and a number of other areas to help nurture
and transform your talent, taking it to the next level. You should
be able to count on your manager to help move you in a direction that will
enhance your career, and be coached and prepared on how to interact with
different industry professionals.
Personal managers offer knowledge and prestige and are able to give you
professional guidance and direction. The key to a successful
relationship with a personal manager is loyalty and trust. If you
decide to have a personal manager, be sure you understand each other and
thoroughly discuss your goals before entering any kind of agreement.
It is vital that there be open lines of communication and trust on both
sides.
